Montagem 2, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

All night my mind raced about the possibilities presented by the letter of yesterday and I slept poorly.  At least this lead to finally meeting my goal of being up at sunrise.  Small victories. Skipping breakfast I went out and was surprised by the people already hurrying about on their little errands.  I spent a few hours asking around and finally was met with success, there was a scalawag alchemist who had been run out of town a few years back that had set up refuge in the woods nearby.  I didn’t relish the thought of a trip out to the country, even though I despise Graltontown – there’s something so unhealthy about trees and flowers just growing wild devil may care.

I decided to try out a new venture today and instead of singing on the streets like a common minstrel I returned to the wizened crone that had purchased my dress and prevailed upon her to let me help her with alterations and the like.  I was glad to see my dress on a stand in the corner rather than draping the haunches of some Graltontown moose-woman.   The old battle-axe took some convincing but she eventually agreed to let me help with some of her sewing.  Truth be told I did  piss-poor job, clearly I’m out of practice, but I think I earned her favor by going out and bringing her back lunch, even if it was just rice and peas with a jug of whiskey.  She gave me a few coins, probably out of pity more than anything and I went out looking for new lodgings.

I found one Alice Kinsley who had a small cottage was looking to take on a boarder.  A VERY small cottage.  A few days ago I had a closet that was about this size.  But as my grandmother always said “A great silence is always a pleasure”.  I paid her for a week in advance since I seem to be having a little trouble staying away from the fine wine and its deleterious impact on my dwindling capital.

I spent the rest of the daylight hours scoping out the sorry little building that sorry little Piltis and his sorry little gang use for their sorry little candle-making scheme.  There wasn’t much activity and I didn’t learn much of anything but as my grandmother always said “When cobwebs are plenty kisses are scarce”.  Patience.  A was chased off by a watchman who accused me either of vagrancy, loitering, pandering or some combination thereof, his speech was so broken and slurred I couldn’t even be sure which.

I returned to Alice’s cottage and her overly friendly cat and after helping myself to some wine and bread turned in on a scratchy pile of straw that was telling lies about being a mattress.  Maybe when I have Duke Eaglevane in my power I’ll have him sleep on a mattress like this for a few months before I kill him.
