Montagem 26, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

This morning I had an early breakfast with Sonsts and three of the merchants – Ressler, Lancomb & Phora before heading out to meet with the Kostelos.  They brought two of their prospective caravan guards with them along with some of the more brawny drovers and porters, which I told them with gusto would do no good if the vicious Kostelos fiends decided to slaughter them – only I could keep the savages at bay.  Sonsts seemed on the verge of fainting like a lady-in–waiting with an overly tight corset.  Which is what killed my grandmother coincidentally.

I instructed them to bring along some trinkets and small goods as gifts which would prevent the barbarians from killing us on sight.  We picked up Augrim as a guide on the way out of town.  He glowered at me darkly as I filled the merchant’s heads with lurid tales of the cruel tortures the Kostelos visited upon their enemies but he kept his mouth shut.

The meet with the tribesmen went smoothly, Phora going to far as to observe that they didn’t seem to very dangerous but I assured her that while they were kind with their friends they were awful in their fury with their enemies.  Sonst was particularly delighted when he was presented with what he thinks is a bear-skin cloak but is actually made from beaver.  We brought many pelts back into town which the merchants made quick work of, I was sure to point out that my involvement – on behalf of my mistress of course – was already bringing them profit.

They enthusiastically brought me into their fold and I even talked them into another share – 4 in total – for only 500 gold.  The only fly in the ointment was that as we were walking about town one of Piltis’ lackeys started bawling at me about not being on “my corner”,  until one of the prospective guards shoved him into a pile of filth.  I was able to play it off easily enough as a crazy street person but it still rankled me.

I spent long hours that night sharing wine and talking with Lord Sonst, for brokering this deal he had been given a share of the caravan as well and had unlikely dreams of rebuilding his family fortune.  While I listened to his grandiose visions I made a decision that I would deal with Piltis before the caravan left town.
