Montagem 28, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

Finding myself a little short on funds I decided to seek out my old friend the dress-maker crone and do some honest work.  I did some needlework just to prove to her that I wasn’t as helpless as I seemed last time but I told her that my real talent would be in sales.  I plastered a servile smile on my face and talked several Graltontown “beauties” into making purchases.  For this I earned a whole 2 gold, but that’s not what this day was about, I wanted some simplicity to clear my head.

The old woman’s name I learned was Brigid Kildare and during some slow times she told me about the more interesting times of her life.  She was once a solider in the king’s regiment, an archer, and had fought in the Battle of Ten Hills and at the Eagle’s Eye Pass.  She earned a medal once for shooting an orc berserker through the eye at one hundred paces and halting the charge of an orcish warband.  She said that one time she rode a Pegasus over the fields of Alinor.

I told her I was learning to shoot a crossbow and asked her what the secret to being a good shot is.  She said “Don’t miss”.

After the store closed I made the rounds telling people the tale of my imaginary vigilante, a nobleman grown weary of the incompetence of the city watch and taking matters into his own hands, and I heard that Piltis was putting out a challenge to the “milksop beardless boy” for a rematch, touting the gameness of his new champion “Blue”.  I made my way to Piltis’ candleworks and with many tears and dramatics told him how this young mountebank had been harassing me and taking the money I should have been giving to him and that he had told me to tell him that the fight was on for tonight at midnight in the old cemetery.  I slipped out as he gathered his minions and started his preparations.

I got to the cemetery early, used my ring to deck myself out in black, and hid in the now sadly familiar confines of the Sonsts family mausoleum. Quite a crowd had gathered by midnight when Piltis and his new dog arrived.  I let him yell and bawl for a few minutes before I stepped out of the crypt and shot Blue through the neck with my crossbow.  Don’t miss, good advice.

The crowd was outraged by this flagrant disregard for the rules of their inhuman “sport” and searched for the offender, but as I anticipated none of them wanted to actually go IN a tomb to search.  Some people are surprisingly squeamish about these things.  As they shouted and stumbled through the darkened cemetery I made myself a makeshift bed on top of some old Sonst family patriarch and fell quickly into a dreamless sleep.
