Mantelderith 11, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

Phora, Mags and I were dead asleep until the innkeeper came to kick us out.  He had seemed a nice enough fellow before but I suppose all the recent turmoil in town had everyone on edge.  The three of us were discussing our plans over a cheap terrible breakfast when the mayor’s men came for me.  Our conversation in the mayor’s office – she had been hiding out in the mortuary and now felt emboldened to return to her rightful place – was brief.  She sort of thanked me for my help while also expressing she would be most pleased if I was to leave immediately and never return.  I asked about a little something – you know, for the effort – and he pleaded poverty due to the recent troubles.  Typical.  She did send me to Stella Contos with a letter instructing her to give me the pick of one of her items.

There wasn’t much to choose from, but I went with Marvelous Pigments, I can’t paint with a damn but I’m sure I’ll find someone who can.  After that I spent some time singing for coin – right back to square one.  I did surprisingly well, I thought people might be somewhat depressed and therefore tightfisted due to recent events.  I met back up with Mags, who had rented out of her cooking skills for a few silver, and Phora who had accomplished nothing.  Turns out merchants don’t have any useful skills.  I was trying to assess their willingness and ability to participate in a little grifting – it’s easier with partners – when Phora suggested we speak to Quinine.

After a cheap awful dinner it was determined that the four of us would make our way on foot back to Graltontown.  To say I was apprehensive about this plan would be a massive understatement but the king’s road is supposed to be relatively safe.  Quinine seemed confident she could guide us and keep us safe without too much trouble – she’s a short woman but seemed fit and said that in addition to being a groom she would sometimes act as a guide to the hunters.

We pooled our meager funds to by rations and a few items for a campsite but in the end it was Quinine who paid the bulk of the bill – although to be fair she hadn’t been captured by savages.  As we were leaving the town square I saw a young cur trying to dip into Phora’s pocket – he should have known by the poor quality of her clothes she wasn’t worth the trouble.  That’s just poor pickpocketing.  I was so angry, not about that but about everything, that I reacted by tackling the sap.  Or trying to anyway, even with a week of hard living I wasn’t exactly cut out to grapple with street punks.  Quinine jumped into the fray instantly, and eventually Mags did as well – Phora just stared in shock.

The townsfolk thought it was quite a sight, three women wrestling with a teenage boy in the town square.  No one did anything to help us though, I guess the guard was still busy restoring the mayor’s authority.  He tried to pull a blade on us as we struggled and in response Mags knocked him cold with a bag of cookware.  We stripped him of everything – even his clothes – and left him lying in the dirt.  Serves him right.  If there’s one thing I hate it’s a thief.

I took his tools and we sold most of the rest of his gear – even so we bedded down in the common room of the tavern that night.  I would have greatly preferred the Sonst family mausoleum.  Tomorrow we begin the journey “home”.
