This morning (early afternoon maybe) we paid a call on Lord Alento. When he heard about the threats against us (or me really) he offered to allow us to stay at his manor. I declined but bid Elth to stay with the Alentos for a while, I’m getting tired of nursemaiding her. I endured high tea before being able to excuse myself and hit the streets.
I did some digging and found that the drunken guardsman was named Androni Titus and was close to losing his position on the watch due to his problems with drink. He was a runaway who had been taken in by a smith and then had fallen in the love with the smith’s daughter which made a real mess of the situation and it sounds like led to his current predicament. I decided to seek out this smith and talk about the possibility of commissioning a blade just to check the situation out. The daughter was there, working, she was pretty, in a workmanlike kind of way.
After that I secured myself a room at a boarding house in Gladewater – the area where the Halflings were congregating. Things seemed tense but I wanted to see how this was all playing out. After getting my rooming squared away I did some rumormongering about my supposed vigilante as well as a Halfling cutting throats due to the treatment of his people – and as long as I was out I raked some muck against Mayor Deveris. I had intended after this to do some surveillance on Piltis but as I was walking I saw a group of men beating another fellow savagely in an alley.
Being the humanitarian that I am I reached into my Bag of Tricks and whipped a wolverine at them. Unfortunately they were able to dispatch it without too much difficulty and when I reached in again nothing happened – I should probably learn more about how this thing works. Fortunately I was able to bluff them into thinking I was casting a deadly spell and they retreated. The bloodied fellow is named Vorifio and claims that the men were mercenaries hired to give him a thrashing because some local merchants think that he’s a fence whose criminal activities are hurting their business.
There are only a few places in Graltontown where hired muscle tends to congregate so after a quick session with the disguise kit I went looking for these ne’er-do-wells, finding them at a delightful establishment called the Rusted Blade. All it took was a few drinks to loosen their tongues – the story they told was a bit different. They claimed to have been hired by the mayor’s aide Beauharnais to beat up Vorifio because he’s a moneylender to whom the mayor was in debt and things were getting rough between the two of them. Very interesting.
I went and visited my dear friend Lord Sonst where he was drowning his sorrows at a cheap tavern. I told him in no uncertain terms that this conduct was unbecoming of someone of his station and he started blubbering about what was he going to do. I told him what we were going to do – we were going bring those murderous fiends that slaughtered the Voculan to justice and rake in a nice reward along with a little bit of fame. It took some coaxing to get him to climb out of the bottle of cheap whiskey he seemed determined to die in, but I was able to get there.
After that I did some digging around Królewna & Bonifacja Trading Company to see if they had any presence in Graltontown and determined based on the “hit list” they had given me that Ramal and Germag either were their agents or wanted to be. Before turning in I also gathered some information on their nemesis Bern. A retired adventuring wizard, Bern lived on the very outskirts of town and had tried in the past to organize is own private police force which brought him into conflict with the city. No one knew any reason why he would have issues with Ramal and Gremag. He had some standing contest where anyone who could defeat him in riddle contest would be entitled to have him make them a magic item. What a buffoon. I mean riddles?
