Oh. My. Gods. I went to see Bern this morning. Surrounded by his voluptuous “apprentice” Shalla and various other lackeys and the man talked for twenty minutes straight about one of this silly riddles. Who has time for this insanity? Anyway, I guess the answer was five. Math was never my strong suit. His house was quite nice from the outside but seemed unusually cramped once inside – there’s probably secret passageways in the walls or some other kind of nonsense. This seems like the kind of guy who writers awful mystery novels in his spare time.
He’s a very shy boy, I can tell you that – I saw about 20 armed guards in the time I was there. Also he clearly wants to be in charge of Graltontown. From what I’ve heard he’s quite a powerful wizard so I’m sure he could take over if he wanted to, he must be one of these “moral” types. I broached the subject of Ramos and Gremag but he brushed me off. What a waste of a morning.
After that I collected Lord Sonst and we went to visit Edrena. My plan was simple, she uses magic to tell us where the murdering servants are hiding and Sonsts and I go get them. She claimed that it wasn’t that easy. I pointed out that she had found me easily enough and she asked why we were even considering doing this. To bring murderers to justice of course, and to fund our fight against Piltis. She said that she’d consider what she could do and get back to me. Another frustrating encounter with a mage. Learning magic must rot your brain.
Rather than waiting around I figured Sonsts and I could do some old fashioned legwork and see if we could smoke out one of these criminals. My impoverished friend is quite a charming fellow when he’s not being a baby so I let him take the lead. We weren’t able to come to any conclusions but if fugitives were easy to find they wouldn’t be worth a reward. Sonst went to visit his mother’s grave – what is it with this guy – and I decided to check in on Piltis’ crew. However, taking a roundabout route at the very edge of town I noticed a large figure lurking in the shadows.
For reasons I can’t quite explain I decided to investigate and was stopped short when I saw the figure was an ogre. I’ve seen a few ogres, usually involved in a bloodsport, and this one was an usual specimen. Usually they’re a dense wall of fat and gristle and tumors but this one was quite skinny – and barely topped eight feet to boot. I wondered if he was a half-blood of some sort. He had a crooked spine and his jaw seemed painfully off-set, but for all that he seemed an inferior example of his species his muscles were like iron cords, I’m sure he could tear me in half without much effort. I was strangely unafraid as he beckoned me over. He seemed more like a wounded bird than a terrible monster.
It was very hard to understand him on account of his malformed jaw, but I gathered that he had been bullied out of his tribe because of his runtiness and had been skulking around uninhabited parts town for some time. He wanted to come live in a house and make friends, he talked about how he could lift big boxes for us. Even for an ogre he seemed rather dim. I told him that that probably wouldn’t be a good idea right now but I’d see what I could do to help him. In the meantime we found an abandoned bakery where he could stay out of sight. He was overjoyed and started eating a moldering bag of flour like it was sweet candy. I told him it would be best if he stayed hidden since most people would be afraid of him and he assured me that he was very sneaky.
He seemed harmless enough but then again he had an ogre hook on his belt that was flecked with dried blood.
After that strange interlude I decided to call it a day.
