After breakfast I headed to the outskirts of town to check on my new friend – halfway expecting him to be gone. Instead he beamed at me with a hideously crooked smile and showed me how he had cleaned up his new “house”. Still looked like a trash heap to me. I had brought him some day old bread and a child’s puzzle cube both of which he treated like fabulous treasures. Before I left he told me about making friends with a bird. The bird was quite dead.
I gathered up Sonst and regrouped with Edrena to see what her clairvoyance had conjured up. Turns out not much, there was spells that could help track down the fugitives but they’re very expensive. Thanks for nothing lady. To make matters worse she insisted on doing a reading for Sonsts before we left. He pretended to be dubious but was obviously entranced by her fakery.
After that bit of foolishness we hit the streets and starting making the rounds. After pounding the pavement all day we were on the verge of giving up when we found a nervous looking schoolmarm who told us that she had seen someone matching the general description of Madrie Burgund, former handmaid to Lady Voculan, at the temple of Adariel. Although it was getting late we decided there was no time to waste and we made our way to the temple. I admit that I lost my temper a little with the acolyte who received us but Sonsts was able to sweet-talk her, he’s much better at playing nice that I am sometimes.
We were ushered in to the tiny office of the priestess in residence, Aenthrynn. Short and thin, with messy white hair and dark hazel eyes she wears tailored clothing which seemed odd for a servant of such a humble and charitable god. She seemed mildly absent-minded, even though she was just sitting talking to us it felt like she was looking for something she had misplaced. It took some doing but Sonsts and I were able to charm and disarm her and she admitted that she had been hiding Madrie in her temple – she believed that she was innocent and had just made a deal with my old friend Erist to smuggle her out of town because she didn’t think Madire would receive a fair trial.
It was even later by this point but after midnight is the perfect time for skullduggery so we kept at it. My favorite priest of Strider had covered his tracks well, but not well enough. He was clearly planning on smuggling her out of the city in a coach – classic mistake, his priesthood always travels by foot, making other arrangements is what stuck out to people. I wished I still had some Dreamer’s Star tea to grab a few hours sleep and feel refreshed but we settled on smoking some Flayleaf to stave off out tiredness and instead stayed up the few hours until dawn. After picking up a crossbow from an early to rise weaponmonger I took Sonst to meet the friendly neighborhood ogre, he was taken quite back at first as you might understand but he adjusted rather quickly.
