On account of yesterday’s events there is a curfew today – is that the right word? No one is supposed to leave their homes today. Some miscreants are flouting this decree but being the law-abiding sort that I am I decided to stay at the boarding house and chat with some of my fellow boarders. Most of the talk was of course about the riot and the mysterious woman who had started the whole uproar. Since I was one of the few “big folk” there I was obliged to assure the shirelings that not all of us were like that. They asked me why they were facing such prejudice and I explained to them that it was all about money – as per usual with humans. I explained that humans had been tainted by Odobenine the Lord of Greed and they desired money over all else.
We all agreed that this was quite sad but that I was one of the “good ones”. Shirefolk having the gift of gab and being naturally nosy of course inquired about my frequent comings and goings – they meant nothing by it of course but it’s probably time to move again.
I had a relaxing day eating, smoking, eating, playing cards, eating, gossiping, and eating with the Halflings. Now these are people who know how to live, I’m not sure how they stay so small with the amount of food they consume. On the other hand one of them told me his name was, I kid you not, Proudfoot Smallfoot Footfoot, so they have their flaws as well.
Around sundown the curfew was lifted, which seems backwards but that’s Graltontown for you. Making the rounds most of the talk on the streets was about the events of yesterday but I was able to pick up a few other items of interest. Crookjaw had been taken to the guard and was currently being held for trial – surprisingly fair treatment for an ogre. More importantly, some folk had come into town asking about Elth on behalf of Andsome Cornelio, who rumor had it was at that very moment traveling to Graltontown with a large body of soldiers. Now that’s the kind of overreaction that warms the heart.
I was out spreading my tale of the Halfling avenger when I came across a young lady – nice looking but wearing a hideous yellow shirt with ruffles and plain brown trousers. I don’t know why exactly but I felt like we were old friends. She said her name was Kellgale Nickoslander and said that she needed help with her snakeoil sales as her usual guy had come down with a bad case of stabbed in the neck at a bar the night before. I told her I would be happy to shill for her.
And shill I did. Kell, as I call her, must have made a good haul that night because her two assistants were handing out her wondrous elixir about as fast as they could. After that we parked her wagon at her house and I helped her and her two assistants mix up some more for tomorrow – her recipe seemed to be river water, sugar, and just a hint of opium.
Heading home after that it seemed like a stupid thing to have done. Why was I helping this person I didn’t know?
