Macendamandel 1, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

After thinking about it further putting Crookjaw on trial makes more sense – it’s a chance for mayor Deveris to try and score some political capital, which he clearly needs at this point.  Time for the triumphant return of cousin Emmalina.

Said triumph was short-lived however as when I got to the jailhouse I was informed that Crookjaw already had counsel.  Hiding my surprise I asked who was representing him and was directed to the offices of Vendriana Leisaro.  At the small office I was confronted by an annoyingly tall and professional looking half-elf woman in an understated by very fine green and chestnut outfit.  She had streaks of white in hear hair but clearly was youthful, who knows how that all works for half-elves though.

I told her that I had been retained to speak for the ogre and she told me that her fee was ten gold a day, fifty up front, plus expenses, and that that was a bargain for her skills.  I told her in the kindest terms that her services were not needed and she paused in her paper-shuffling and pushed down her spectacles to giving me an appraising look.  After a moment she said that her fee was ten gold a day and that I could be her second for the trial if I wanted to learn how the law works.

Before I could respond she continued by saying that it was in someone’s best interest that this creature doesn’t talk and that someone was going to pay her.  She said that the only thing that mattered here was whoever had put this simpleton up to these robberies.  I told her I knew who was behind the whole thing and was prepared to share this information.

She pursed her lips for a moment and then said that she would do anything to win – anything within the law.  She mentioned a lot of shady but legal things she would do but then said that what she wouldn’t do is falsify evidence or use enchantments to alter a witness’s memories or coerce a judge or juror.  And that she wouldn’t allow anyone to lie on the stand.

I told her that wouldn’t be a problem.  She said “We’ll see”.

After unenthusiastically handing over the fifty gold I traveled out to the Alento compound to collect Elth.  It wouldn’t do to have her hanging around with Armin when she was supposed to be kidnapped.  I was just in time too, due to the turmoil in town the Alentos were closing up their compound and heading to their holdings in Charterton.  I disguised Elth and stashed her at the Vermillion Dragoon.

I rounded out the afternoon by collecting some trade goods and taking them out to the Kostelos to keep that relationship going.  I spent some time chatting with Ox-Head about the Skin-Takers and their apparent destruction.  He had no sympathy for them, clearly there was no love lost there.

On my way back into town I spied Augrim returning as well – along with a couple other fellows who had Felix chained and marching with them.  Augrim was his usual reticent self but his companions had looser tongues.  Augrim had tracked down Felix but wasn’t able to apprehend him alone – sounds like he got run off to me – so he teamed up with these other chaps to bring him in and split the bounty.  I asked if they minded if I talked to Felix and they gave their leave so I asked him what happened at Gib’s Tor.  He said he was innocent without saying much else, which was not very persuasive, but then he said if he had the kind of money they said he stole would he have been in the straits in which I found him originally?  Which is a good point.

I said I’d do my best to help him.  Back in town Edrena found me and said that “Bernie” had discovered that Piltis was making a deal with a disreputable half-orc – as if there were any other kind – to acquire some kind of monster for his “big time” bloodsport.  No other details but he was planning on leaving town in three days on this errand. I did some digging and the word around town was that Piltis was challenging the “deadboy” to come up with a creature of his own to face off with him.

Before I turned in for the night I ran into my good friend Kell who asked to borrow some money.  Normally that’s not the kind of thing I would ever do, but we’re such close friends I didn’t even think twice about it.
