Macendamandel 3, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

The situation in Graltontown is starting to get quite out of hand.  There’s anti-establishment graffiti popping up all over the walls of buildings and there seems to be at least one protest of some kind at any given time.  The guard has taken to escorting the Halfling servants to their master’s homes while others have just started living in their employer’s homes.  Nevertheless several Halflings have been attacked or harassed – rumors are that a few have been killed but I believe that’s just talk.

I paid an early morning visit to one of the few printers in Graltontown – an anxious woman with ink-stains all over her.  I tried to sound her out about what she would or wouldn’t print but she claimed not even to able to read, seems this business was her husband’s until he ran off with another woman.  She was so eager for my business it was somewhat off-putting. I jotted down a quick broadsheet and she started churning them out immediately – she almost passed out when I handed over all the gold.  She did start weeping openly and grabbed my hand like a drowning woman, pressing her cheek to it and thanking me profusely. Getting disentangled from her was quite a chore.

Soon her network of street-rats and urchins would be distributing the news of Mayor Deveris’s failure to maintain order, mounting debt, and his scheme to rob the very citizens of Graltontown that he was supposed to protect.  Hopefully enough of these Graltontown hicks can actually read to make it worthwhile.

With that done I met up with Vendriana at the courthouse where she was in the process of negotiating a deal – there would be no trial for Crookjaw.  With the mayor himself coming under suspicion they wanted this to go away as quietly as possible.  There was already uproar over the mayor overseeing the proceedings and talk of conspiracy was everywhere. People were calling for an independent investigation from Three Rivers or Cathars – the fate of one slow-witted ogre was no longer a priority.

They quite reasonably just wanted Crookjaw exiled from Graltontown but I pressed Vendriana to push the exact opposite – he should remain in town under supervision.  The poor soul just needed proper guidance to flourish.  It was quite an uphill battle but we had them over a barrel – they needed this matter to drop, not fester in the public eye.  In the end Crookjaw was given rights as an actual Graltontowner – and I have to say the inclusion of a malformed developmentally challenged monster truly uplifts a place like Graltontown.

Since I had already paid Vendriana fifty gold and she only ended up working three days on this “case” I asked her to move on to defend Felix.  She agreed only after I promised not to be involved in the defense.  Some people have no gratitude.

Crookjaw didn’t have a clue what was going on but was glad to be released from his cramped cell.  The next thing was to find him a place to stay and a job – fortunately I had an idea on that front already.  Returning to the boarding house I gathered some of my Halfling acquaintances and told them that my friend here was new in town and would be happy to watch over them as they made their way around town.  Many of them were clearly reluctant but a few grinned – obviously imagining the looks on their tormentor’s faces when they saw their new protector.  He wouldn’t need much in return – just room and board.  Halfling cooking and an ogre’s appetite?  There’s a perfect match.

Leaving Crookjaw with his wee new friends I went looking for a hireling – it was time for the murderous Halfling to strike.  It took some doing but I was able to find a gnome who wasn’t above a little dirty work.  He had the twisting tattoos of a Black Spiral Dancer on the back of his hands and was wearing a purple kilt of all things, but beggars can’t be choosers.  Well they can but they shouldn’t.  He agreed to my job and I handed over the last of my funds.  I tried to give him some pointers on how to disguise himself as a Halfling but he brushed me off with a very rude comment about how he didn’t come down to the brothel to tell me how to do my job.
