This morning all anyone can talk about is grisly murder of Pikkel Turner, his mutilated body found in the middle of Maiores Road, the most affluent (for Graltontown) area in town. Based on the cuts, “experts” are saying that the killer must have been a Halfling, leading various wags to proclaim that a Halfling killer has been stalking the town for weeks! And once again the city watch is powerless.
Heading to meet with Edrena I took note of how tense things were in the streets – the situation has been chaotic for a while now but this seemed different. People are afraid. As Edrena and I went to see Bern to pick up our talisman she prattled on about how impressive she found him. As we got closer to the wizard’s compound I noticed that his men were patrolling the streets and everything seemed a great deal safer.
Bern had completed our Talisman of Spying and the ring that goes along with it and after handing it over invited us to stay for brunch. I declined, but Edrena nearly swooned with delight. As I was leaving I was accosted by Shalla who whined about how close Edrena and Bern were becoming. Not sure why she’d thought I’d care about this. I tried to brush her off but she became belligerent and said that she was no slouch as a wizard herself and could make things very difficult for me. If her problem is with Edrena why is she hassling me? I told her I’d see what I could do and got the Hells out of there.
Passing off the amulet to one of Piltis’ street thieves was easy enough – now we could keep tabs on him at any time. Making the rounds I checked in with Vendriana and Felix, she had capitalized on the current turmoil and got all the charges against him dropped; Elth, who was getting bored but whom I assured things would be picking up soon; and Crookjaw. I asked him how he thought he might fair against a cave giant and he was quite confident – I’m not sure how much stock I should put in that however.
After that it was time to gather some information – I was finally able to track down Dorehe, or rather her parents. They said that not long after her falling out with Claire she had been out looking for work and never came home. Ugh, just what I need. Again I failed to find any information about the woman with the dreadlocks. While I was on my way to the watchhouse I ran into Kellgale Nickoslander and for some reason I could not remember us being friends at all. The smile on her face disappeared instantly when I asked about the money I had lent her. Shortly after that she disappeared as well.
At the guardhouse I expected to get the usual runaround – my money was on them saying that Dorehe had run off with some fella – but to my surprise the watchman I talked to had gone into his own pocket to hire independent investigators to look into her disappearance. He said that it was because the watch was too busy with the current troubles but we both knew it was because they’re incompetent. Clearly this isn’t standard watch procedure and he told me that several young women had disappeared in the past few months, Dorehe was just the most recent.
I went to visit these investigators, Waycombe and Axmar, in their tiny office above a bakery. I had expected them to be con-artists bilking money from a caring watchmen but I was wrong again.
They had tracked Dorehe’s movements down to the minute and concluded that she had disappeared almost three weeks ago and they were confident that she had been kidnapped by someone called the Splithog Pauper – how many two-copper crimebosses were there in this dungheap of a town? Real name Beltian Kruin, he was the former first mate in a pirate ship who had ran off with his captain’s woman. They had nothing on him to go to the Watch with and had trouble staying on him – apparently he’s a “master of disguise” and often costumes himself as a crippled beggar.
I went and collected Edlund and we hit the beggar hang-outs, I may have fibbed to him a little and implied that this Splithog fellow was in league with Piltis. Despite my charm and Edlund’s willingness to crack skulls we weren’t making much progress until I spied a fellow who looked the part but was far too well-fed to be a street rat, I have a pretty good eye for disguises. We trailed him to a derelict wainwrights’ shop halfway down a muck-smeared street but he must have spotted us because not long after he went in we saw him climbing out a second story window and onto the roof.
Not wanting him to get away I drank my Potion of Jump and sprang up to the roof as nimbly as an elfin hunting cat. Unfortunately I hadn’t really thought this through I realized as the Splithog Pauper pulled out an ugly looking blade. Having no great desire to get into a roof-top knife-fight I told him I just wanted to know what he was doing with the girls, that I didn’t care about him, but he came at me anyway and I stumbled and fell, sliding across the rood and falling to the ground. Sadly the burst of pain I felt when I hit earth is starting to become familiar to me. Edlund tended to me as the Pauper escaped like a roof-rat.
Nursing a sore everything I decided to call that a day.

Behind the Curtain : Ela made her save against filth fever and took no damage today. She also made her save against the wand of Charm Person. I rolled an event and got Crime Spree but it’s unlikely to come into play. Maybe I should change up rolling for Ela as if she’s an organization unto herself.
