Macendamandel 6, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

I had intended to spend the day working on finding Dorehe again but instead all Hells broke loose.  Andsome Cornelio, none other than the third cousin of Duke Eaglevane himself, thundered into town with a large body of knights.  There’s many rumors flying around but there seems to be no solid information on what happened – and what happened is that fighting broke out immediately.  Whether this was started by the town guard, or by unhappy citizens, or some other party is unknown, but it escalated quickly and the streets were not safe.

I stayed hunkered down with my Halfling boarding-mates and Crookjaw until mid-day when it seemed like things were starting to calm down.  I sought out Lord Sonst, who with his new-found fame and semi-prosperity had finagled his way into saying with the Wardsmeadow family.  I once again had to contend with an intransigent footman and a superior butler – do they teach them this at butler college? – but eventually was able to speak to Lord Sonst The Not-So-Poor-Anymore.  I told him that Cornelio was in town causing such a ruckus because he was looking for his fiancée – and I knew where she was.  I needed him to round up some rough and ready fellows for a rescue mission before this got out of hand and the entire city burned to the ground.

With a pompous oath (I liked him better when he was poor) he swore it would be done and I went to collect Elth from the Scarlet Dragoon.  She was quite rattled by the events in town and I had no time for her nonsense for I gave her the last of my oil of taggit saying it was something to calm her nerves – which I suppose it is in a way.  With her out cold, I restored her natural appearance and recruited some sleazebags to help me move her out of town to “my” land – which turned out to be a tumbled down lumbermill.  The line I gave them was that she was my employer and I was getting her out of town due to the violence in the streets, I told them to stay there and watch her while I went back to town and got provisions.

I met up with Sonst and his brave companions – two of the more dandified fops I have ever seen, but they did have slim swords and thankfully there wasn’t going to be any serious combat.  We mounted up and thundered off to rescue the maiden fair.  The sleazebags were a little confused when I came back with three popinjays instead of supplies and they were even more confused when dandy #2 skewered one of them with his rapier.  The battle between dandies and dregs was close to being a farce, but a boar from my Bag of Tricks was able to turn the tide.  One of the poor fellows tried to yield but somehow in the chaos he got his throat slit.

Lord Sonst courteously and ostentatiously greeted Elth and said that he would return her to the arms of her love Lord Cornelio.  She shot me a look but I gave her a little nod and she went along with the charade. It was quite the scene when Sonst and his friends thundered into town (those poor horses) proclaiming that they had rescued Miss Belker, the lady love of the noble fool who had almost sacked the city that morning.

It was quite a tearful reunion, although I think Elth’s tears may have been for a different reason than people thought.
