Day two on the “road” to Heathgrove. In spite of all that’s gone on between us I’m finding myself starting to like Kellgale. Setting aside her atrocious wardrobe you have to admire someone who can talk herself out of most problems and has managed to find some loyal goons. A lot of goons have problems following a woman but her men seem committed to her – or at least committed to the money she can bring them.
Fairly uneventful travel today. We did come across a finely dressed fellow with two guards that claimed to be a merchant from Malgareth heading to Graltontown which is a little hard to swallow – he’d have to be pretty far off course for that to be true, but I saw no sign of any goods. No merchant worth their salt is going to make a trip empty handed. He asked if we were heading to Heathgrove for the big event and I said that we were, plus I was looking for some souls to steal. He laughed heartily at that.
We went our separate ways and when we made camp I decided to treat everyone to a few songs – it’s been a while. If I do say so myself it was quite a performance. A couple of my men were moved to tears in fact – it’s interested how many tough guys can really be touched by something like that. I suppose when you so rarely have anything soft in your life you don’t really have any defenses.
We should get to Heathgrove tomorrow. Heathgrove once prospered off the traffic along the Compass River but since the rise of Three Rivers and the shifting of trade to the north it’s become a depressed area. As such it has become a haven for outlaws, bandits, and various other desperate characters – you know the kind of place that would be holding a gladiatorial event.
I wracked my brain to try and remember who was running Heathgrove these days, but much like Graltontown it wasn’t the kind of place anyone much thought about. It’s entirely possible that no one is in charge of the place at all.
We’ll find out tomorrow hopefully.
