Montumazin 5, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

Before the creation of the Scar the imaginatively named Sluice was a small city situated at a key point of the Silver Springs River that controlled a series of dams and reservoirs that made highly lucrative river travel possible.  Some folks say that it also supported some kind of magical generation apparatus that allowed the wizards of Sluice to create all manner of enchanted objects – that part could just be talk for what I know though.  Unlike many other settlements Sluice survived the coming of the Scar relatively intact but once the river had dried up the city fell into disuse.  People talk about it as being a ruin, but it’s more of a ghost town – there’s some damage due to neglect but overall it’s just a big empty city.  It’s more than a little eerie to walk through city streets were there’s not a soul to be found.

We got up early and carefully approached Sluice – slipping into some of the outer buildings before the sun was up.  After that it was up to Arlonni and Molly to sneak around doing roguelike stuff to hopefully see what was what and not get kill in the process.  They were gone for an excruciatingly long time.  I had debating going to look for them for a while when they finally returned in the late afternoon.  On the east side of Sluice in one of the more intact areas of the city a small camp of sorts had been set up.  Dozens of people, a goodly number of them appearing to be soldiers, were being kept in a holding area of sorts that had been created by blocking off several buildings with magic stone walls.  For the most part the “keeping” was being done hordes of skeletons under the control of a wizard, although there were some of those disgusting little things called homunculi about as well.  As if that wasn’t enough they reported that there was also a giant of some kind and a blue dragon as well – a small one, but still.

I’ve always been aware that dragons existed of course – I heard tales from knights about their encounters with dragons back at court – but I never really thought about them in real terms until now.  I liken it to a volcano, you know they’re out there and they’re dangerous but you don’t think about it because what are the chances you’re ever going to be near a volcano?  I’ve never seen a dragon before, I kind of hope that I never do but it seems unlikely at this point doesn’t it?

They then went on to report that they saw no sign of the treasure they were after – at which point they finally figured out that there’s no reason the treasure would still be here.  I’m sure Królewna & Bonifacja moved it somewhere safe as soon as they got it.  This was an unfortunate development but I was able to convince them that the treasure was still around and it was just hidden – it always helps when you’re selling a lie that people want to believe.  Of course then Argo and the rest of the crew started preparing for the frontal assault and I had to persuade them not to do that – which was even harder than convincing them not to leave.

“Look folks, according to Molly there’s more than a hundred slaves penned up here – that’s a lot of food and water.  They have to be getting supplies right?  Let’s just watch and see what the routine here is – let’s be smart about this.  There’s no harm in learning more right?  We can always try the direct approach later if we need to.  As long as they have no idea that we’re here we have the advantage.”

Eventually they bought into the idea.  I’m very persuasive you know.
