Sneaking around has never been one of my strong suits – I tend to go more for the disguise route than the skulking about path, but Molly and Arlonni were able to help me get close to the slave camp without too much trouble. I was worried that despite the assurances of Molly and Arlonni that our targets would have patrols sweeping the empty street of the city but they did not. Hard to say if it’s because they don’t have a lot of manpower – skeletons being very poor scouts – or because we’re in the middle of the Scarlands and they have no reason to expect anyone to show up here. Probably some of both.
Surveillance takes a lot of patience, nothing much goes on for hours at a time, but while I get bored easily while traveling I have no problem staying on task when it comes to observation like this. My two companions both tuned out pretty quickly but my attention was rapt all day. The “giant” was very curious indeed. He looked “just” like a very large man – most giants look different in some way or the other, blue skin or tusks or stony skin or something. This fellow just looked like a nine foot tall guy. Oh, and he could fly too – which is disconcerting. Identifying monsters isn’t my forte by any means but I had no clue what we were dealing with there.
I briefly saw the dragon as well. Even from a distance, even though it was only the size of a horse, even though it had no idea I was there – seeing something like that makes your heart skip a beat. I mentioned how those pegasus seemed like freedom made form – this dragon seemed like power given physical form. Now I get why there’s no such thing as an old dragonhunter. I had assumed originally that the homunculi were the minions of the wizard that commanded the undead but there was another fellow who seemed to be their master – based on the number of bottles and vials strapped to him as if on a bandoleer I would assume he’s an alchemist or potion-maker of some kind.
They were leaning heavily on the skeletons and homunculi to keep the slaves in their place – I’m sure the possibility of being roasted alive by a dragon or crushed by a giant can keep you in line but with that many people a few will slip through the net unless you have more eyes on the job – or eyeless skull sockets in this case. That seems pretty shaky to me, you lose the wizard and you lose everything, but I suppose it’s much cheaper than easier than bringing a bunch of armed men out here.
But even better, from what I saw this quartet doesn’t seem to get along so well. From what I observed the wizard and the potion-man seem to despise one another, and while the dragon and the giant seem to be close allies they just as clearly seem to think very little of their human companions. There’s nothing like discord amongst your enemies to warm a girl’s heart. Seeing no reason to wait I decided to start stirring the pot straight away.
“Alright ladies, the guy with all the potions seems to be set up over there – which one of you wants to sneak in there and replace the contents of one of his vials with this?” I held up one of the potions Sarensa’s dominated ragman had tried to sell us.
“What does it do?” asked Arlonni.
“No clue. Nothing good.”
