Argo and the rest were off early to set up by the wagon-tracks while the three ladies returned to our surveillance. The potion-man made an appearance today and he looked like a walking corpse. He turned up only long enough to trade some angry words with the wizard before returning to his “home” abandoned building. Things were pretty uneventful after that until around midday when the dragon showed up to intimidate the wizard – and then to fly off in the direction of where Argo and the rest would be. Hopefully they’re smart enough to stay under cover. Which may be too much to hope for since they’re adventurers and all.
Not long after the dragon flew off the dozen or so homunculi that attended to the potion-maker appeared and attacked the wizard. He was completed caught off guard but rallied quickly and floated up out of their reach, ordering his skeletons to counter-attack and blasting at them with spells. A dozen skeletons and two of the homunculi were destroyed before the giant flew up and roared at them to stop. The potion-maker came out and another angry shouting match ensued – I would learn later that Molly had slipped into the wizard’s room and rummaged around to attract the attention of one of the homunculi – disappearing again once it was lured in. It had found the potions and reported back to its master which prompted the attack.
The giant clearly wanted to kill them both on the spot but just as clearly could not – quite the predicament. Before he could do much more the dragon came winging back at what I assume is maximum dragon speed. It was very fast for sure. He said a few words and then the giant jumped on his back and they flew off. I wonder if that’s because the giant can only fly for a limited time or because the dragon is faster.
As soon as they were gone the wizard wheeled and conjured a blast of flame that knocked the potion-maker to the dirt. I thought he might be dead, but he started slowly trying to crawl away as the wizard stalked up on him. The wizard kicked him over and stood over him with a gesture I assume is menacing to someone who knows about magic but to me just looked like someone working an invisible marionette. There’s a drink called an Invisible Marionette at a bar called Tulip in the capital – very tasty. I was too far away to hear what was being said, but I didn’t need to – the wizard was clearly saying that he could kill the potion-man any time he wanted to so don’t mess with me again. Giving a warning like that is quite a bit of forbearance for a despicable scum slaver.
The wizard turned his back on the burned man and the homunculi drag/carried him back to his claimed building.
I was worried when we returned to our “base” that Argo and the rest would never be seen again, but they were already there and grinning like fools. A supply wagon had come towards the city and they did what adventurers do best – they attacked. However in a shocking twist not only did they capture the two wagon drivers instead of killing them, they followed that by quickly getting the wagon hidden in a nearby building on our side of town. They claimed to have left no trace of violence but the way the dragon and giant tore off makes me think they knew something was up – you don’t race off like that because of an overdue wagon.
I had a chat with the two waggoneers who were clearly scared out of their wits, which seems entirely appropriate given the circumstances. They claimed they didn’t know anything about the slaving, which I don’t believe but it’s an easy story to sell so I didn’t push it. They swore up and down that they would testify they were bringing supplies out there but that’s more or less pointless on its own – I’m going to need a much better witness if I’m going to go after Królewna & Bonifacja. Fortunately I’m hoping I have one almost ready to go. Time to take a risk.
I snuck as close as I dared in the night and then used my last potion of invisibility to sneak into the potion-maker’s home away from home. I don’t know how long they’ve been here but he had quite the set up – bed, small bookshelf full of weird tomes, a nice little lab set up for himself, it was quite lived-in indeed. He didn’t look so good, laying on the bed sweating profusely and gasping for air – whatever was in that Serensa potion is clearly bad stuff, and of course being halfway burned alive doesn’t tend to help either. I watched him for a few moments before dropping the invisibility and clearing my throat.
To say he was surprised doesn’t even begin to do it justice – I think he almost died of fright.
“Who are you?!” he gasped.
I knelt and took his clammy hand tenderly “You look like you need a friend. I’m a friend.”
