Montumazin 23, Year 887 (New Imperial Calendar)

I asked Prudence to teach me the language of the Northmen as we traveled.  She refused to ride in the wagon for some illogical Northlands reason so she walked beside while instructing me on the finer points of shouting and grunting.  She’s an awful teacher but thankfully I’m a quick study.  I was thinking that it might be similar to the Kostelos language, barbarians are barbarians right?  But there was nothing in common between the two tongues.  She said that she could also teach me Gutnish, the language of the Frost Giants and Crom, the language of Orcs if I wanted.  Speaking three languages is pretty good for a savage from the north.

Early in the day we overtook three wagons, a homesteader family that was giving up on trying to tame this land and heading back to Ridy Run.  The patriarch was a fellow called Clouder and when I told him that we hadn’t seen any settlements along the river he said that he wasn’t surprised – it’s safer to stay away from the river on account of marsh-creatures from the Elshin coming out and night and causing mischief.  When I told him we had had no issues with river monsters either she seemed somewhat surprised but speculated that they wouldn’t approach a part of this size.  They were happy to join the safety of our convoy.

With them they had a dark-haired woman under arms who was six feet tall if she was a foot.  But what drew my eye was her signet ring – that of the Fenrix family.  It would be pretty bold to be wearing a stolen signet ring openly, but she certainly didn’t seem like a Fenrix, they’re a small reedy folk.  She wasn’t overly friendly but I was able to gather that her name was Eila and that she had married into the Fenrix family.  She didn’t say as much but I got the impression that she stayed out in places like this to avoid her milksop husband.  Prudence had been eyeballing her since she came “aboard” and pretty quickly the popular thing in the caravan became discussing  which of them would win a fight.  Which is amusing because no one here had seen either one of them do any fighting – it was all just wild speculation.  People love to form opinions based on nothing and then stick to them beyond the point of reason. If you weren’t aware.

I figured we could use some entertainment so I suggested to Prudence that she and Eila have a wrestling match when we stopped for the day – give the people a show.  She was in immediately.  Eila took a little more convincing.

“Wrestling huh?  You want me to oil up for that?”

“Do I look like the kind of person who would be interested in that sort of thing?”

Once she was convinced that this was to be a proper contest and nothing prurient she agreed – although I could tell she wasn’t all that excited about it.  When the time came I did my best to channel a carnival barker and get the crowd whipped into a frenzy.  A couple folk took it upon themselves to provide some preliminary entertainment – one fellow was a decent juggler, another was a pretty uninspired tumbler but when he tell on his face that got more laughs than the comedian who came next.  After that some of the soldiers took on some of the brawny civilians in a sort of multi-man boxing game that I had never heard of.  Made no sense to me, but people seemed to enjoy it – there was hitting in the face so it was a crowd pleaser.

The main event was nothing I cared about – two large women pawing at each other is not my idea of a good time – but it was a smashing success.  In the end Eila was able to throw Prudence’s shoulders to the ground but she took her loss with good grace and Eila admitted that she learned a trick to taking down a larger opponent once when she was forced to wrestle an ogre.  The two of them seem well on their way to becoming fast friends and the entire group seemed to be in good spirits.
