People love a public execution. I’ve never been sure exactly why – it’s not like people line up to see an old man die peacefully in his bed. But build a gibbet and suddenly people are setting up stands to sell meat pies. The adults are bad enough but the kids that run around at these events are the worst – bloodthirsty little monsters. I didn’t attend many, but one time where was a burning at the stake, which is rare enough the Duke and all his cronies turned out for the event. Sometimes people get on my case for having a pessimistic outlook on life – I would like those people to observe a crowd gather to watch a living person be burned to death and tell me that everyone doesn’t deserve whatever they get. People stood in a crowd for hours to watch the flesh peel off someone’s skin and their fat bubble like candle wax. You tell me people are inherently good in light of that fact with a straight face.
I bring this up because today we came across a smoldering stake with the remains of a person strapped to it. We reached the divergence of the Needle and the Compass River early in the day and turned west towards Malgareth – a few hours later we came across the immolated corpse on a post. It was across the river but still that’s not the kind of thing you want to come across. People stopped and gawked for a while of course, but I got them on the move pretty quickly – whatever happened here there’s no reason we need get involved with it.
Not long after that we spotted and were spotted by a group of army scouts, they were as bemused to see us as we were thrilled to see them. Once they and Marsh went through all the military rigmarole they told us that the army was building an outpost on the river south of Ridy Run which is why they were out here. They were quite amazed by the tale we had to tell – rightly so I suppose, it is rather amazing. The offered to escort me ahead of the group to their commanding officer but after some thought I declined. Better to stay with the group for now. Once the military gets involved I’m sure they’ll take all the captives into their custody and while they’ll probably be out for Królewna & Bonifacja’s blood even more than I will, at that point I’ll lose all control of the situation.
I had laid back and let others talk to the soldiers but as we continued on the lead scout came to speak with me. He was lean and wolfish looking as military wilderness types often are, but he also had a most peculiar skin discoloration – below the bridge of his nose and under the cheeks his skin was very dark, almost black – unlike the rest of his face. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. I thought that it might be a strange tattoo at first, but looking at it (subtly of course) I think it was just the color of his skin. Very odd indeed. I didn’t catch his name but I’m sure he’s called Hawk or Raven or Hatchet or something like that.
“Sounds like you’re quite the hero.”
“It was a team effort. I give all glory to the Gods.”
“They say you killed an archmage single-handedly and then faced down a dragon.”
“Still you saved the King’s Own, that’s something to be proud of.”
“Well we all have to do our part. Wars don’t win themselves after all.”
